Who is responsible for this site?
I am. What can I do for the MPSC?
This is an impressive site and seems factual. Why was it developed and by whom?
I have always wondered when reading mail advertisements, receiving unsolicited phone calls, and saying “no thank you” to pushy door to door sales people if there was really any savings by switching my natural gas supplier. So one day this past winter while staring at my Consumers Energy bill while some talking head on CNBC was explaining the glut of natural gas from fraking and the abnormally warm weather I did some research. I used the MPSC website (perhaps you maintain the content) to figure out just how many different alternative natural gas suppliers were out there. Well, it’s quite a few it turns out, and not all of them service residential customers. I spent the better part of an afternoon visiting each company’s website and compiling a list of plans and rates on a piece of paper. After this exercise I started to get the idea for a website to publish this information all in one spot, for all the major regulated utilities. Anyone who might be wondering what the cheapest rate for natural gas is and from whom they can get it can probably figure it out in about 2 minutes using my website. That is my goal.
I suppose once I collect more data one could make conclusions about which companies were regularly the cheapest and which were borderline on savings or even cost residential consumers more.
As for who I am, well I don’t think I am going to post my name, address, phone number, social security number, etc. on here or send it to you in an email. I am just just a life long Michigan resident is who generally interested in the price of natural gas and it’s potential as cheap energy source in the future. I am not sponsored by anyone, and I am not making any money from this website. I am sure it’s just a coincidence that someone from DTE Energy contacted me immediately after you did asking me the same questions. I got a thank you email from a guy a few weeks ago saying he found my website and figured out his mother was paying $8.99 per MCF fixed rate and thought she was getting ripped off. Knowing that this website is helping real people is what keeps me doing it.
P.S. – There is nothing on this website that is not publicly available from the gasrates.pdf on the MPSC website or each respective alternative supplier website. So anyone should feel free to double check and verify the data posted. I am happy to fix errors.
Thank you for the information. This site is very informative and I will let you know if I come across any data errors. I appreciate your goal and effort to educate the public.
